2024年6月，习近平主席在和平共处五项原则发表70周年纪念大会上宣布，“为更好支持全球南方合作，中方将设立全球南方研究中心”。2024年11月，在二十国集团领导人第十九次峰会上，习近平主席再次强调“建设好全球南方研究中心”。2025年3月，全球南方研究中心（Global South Research Center, GSRC）在北京正式揭牌成立。全球南方研究中心由国务院发展研究中心负责建设，依托中国国际发展知识中心开展工作。
全球南方研究中心是由南方国家、北方国家和国际组织专家学者共同参与的开放性、国际化研究平台，致力于汇聚全球研究资源，围绕全球南方发展和合作中的关键、重大问题开展研究咨询和交流对话等活动，以促进全球南方共同和可持续发展，为增强南南合作、构建人类命运共同体提供智力支持。全球南方研究中心设理事会，由各区域代表性国家的权威研究机构负责人、全球南方顶尖专家、有关国际和区域机构代表组成，为中心研究交流提供支持。
全球南方研究中心年度系列研究报告由中心团队与国际专家共同撰写发布，聚焦全球南方共同关注的发展议题，提出解决实际问题的政策建议。
2025年，全球南方研究中心共发布17篇研究报告，已正式上线全球南方研究中心官方网站（www.gsrc-web.net）。
