In the following year or two, I heard and witnessed the top 50 private real estate companies in the country facing layoffs, some of which were directly cut by two-thirds. I still remember that around the end of 2021, an old friend said that he was particularly stressed and nervous, and the company can support until today is mainly to do real estate projects, indicating that it is very difficult to have such a business later. Which way to go? He decided that moving from real estate to government projects might be the only way forward. It can be imagined that such small design units focusing on real estate projects have also lost their way in the storm. At this time, he finally understood why in the two years before the epidemic, most of the small special engineering design companies were integrated with comprehensive qualified design institutes, whether it was business or personnel restructuring.
In the following year, the large private design institutes and state-owned design institutes that I have heard about around me also fell into difficulties one after another, and the large-scale layoffs of hundreds of people, and even the suspension of salary or only the basic salary, became the norm. All this makes people sigh about the changes and impermanence of the industry. Since then, I have also seen that the most well-known civil engineering major of an institution of higher learning in Beijing was not able to recruit people, and I did not think deeply at that time. Then, last year, the architecture major of a top institution of higher learning in Shanghai dropped by more than 100 points. From the original signature industry to today's unpopular industry, the academic community is very worried. Looking back at well-known local universities, fellow alumni said that many college leaders and teachers are worried about the employment of graduates in related fields, and the employment rate has reached an all-time low. A well-known master's advisor also revealed that he is worried about how to find a suitable job in the industry after graduation.
Recently, I received a phone call from two old friends and learned that I resigned from my job again. This time, I was not forced to lay off employees, but chose to leave voluntarily due to excessive workload. Another friend said that although I am not in danger for the moment, but this is only the first wave, there is likely to be a second wave, my team may not be able to survive. I heard that even well-known state-owned enterprises and central enterprises are laying off employees, both employees and leaders, are helpless to this situation. The sadness and helplessness of the industry goes without saying, it can be seen that we are facing a challenge full of unknown variables.
The related industries in the field of engineering construction are generally filled with a sense of crisis, although there are many slightly younger people who have changed careers, unless they are very passionate, or enough to support the status quo. Most of the senior designers who can stay are still involved in feelings, or they have no better choice, and they are still looking for a turnaround. There are also quite a few designers have changed from the role of wage laborers to the role of freelance designers, and even to a diversified career path. At the same time, some design institutes have also shifted from traditional offline mode to online, using new media channels to promote, it can be said that most traditional industries are actively exploring the road of online development.
I remember that last year, I received resumes from three elderly friends of master's degree graduates, from environmental art design, intelligence and pure art majors of famous foreign universities respectively. Looking at these excellent resumes and the excellent family background behind them, I can't help but lament that so many talented young people are looking for more suitable job opportunities, which shows how fierce the competition in the industry is.
